Ride with Gordon on his annual ride to Phil's Fish Market, 10700 Merritt Street, Castroville, California 95012
The original Phil’s Fish Market, then known as the Fish Market at Moss Landing, opened in 1982. The original Phil’s Fish Market, known then as the Fish Market at Moss Landing, opened in 1982 in a tiny (250 square foot) industrial space on the island. Phil began by primarily selling locally caught fish and, as we grew, customers began referring to the shop as “Phil’s Fish Market”. We added our first food item in that early era, a family-inspired Cioppino-to-go. The now world-famous recipe belonged to “Mama Nina”—Phil’s grandmother, Nina Catalano. In addition to winning a Throwdown competition against Bobby Flay, Phil’s version of Mama Nina’s Cioppino has been featured on countless food shows, in magazines, newspapers, and international media articles around the world; Mama Nina’s delicious recipe was a key seed to our success and she would be so proud to know so many folks have enjoyed her Cioppino.
In 2022, we celebrated our 40th anniversary and moved into our new, historic location just three miles from our longtime home in Moss Landing. The latest Phil’s Fish Market and Eatery is next to the iconic Castroville sign and was originally built in 1869 as the first schoolhouse in Castroville. Over many years on the island of Moss Landing, we have witnessed innumerable changes, survived the Loma Prieta earthquake, outgrew our original space, and made countless new friends worldwide by sharing our love for good food. As we embark on our latest chapter, we are eternally thankful to continue to bring the freshest seafood to you, our valued customers. We are delighted to have you in our new Castroville location and hope you enjoy your experience with us!
